A Letter To My Legacy

My Why. Or Better Yet My Who.

I’ve always loved the idea of blogs. I read them almost daily, searching for little snippets of inspiration, whether it’s ideas for dinner or tips on planning a party. So, when I decided it was my turn to add my two cents to the internet, I faced my first challenge: coming up with a name.

I tried everything. I asked ChatGPT, I Googled name puns (Victorious Baird? Hah—no, thank you!), and I even searched for creative blog name ideas. That was a disaster. Nothing felt right.

Then, I turned to something more personal, my mom’s Storyworth responses. If you haven’t heard of Storyworth, it’s a service where you pay a fee, and they send weekly journal prompts to someone you choose. That person responds, and at the end of the year, all their entries are compiled into a bound book. Last Christmas, I gifted my mom a subscription, and each week, her journal entries are sent to my email as well.

One particular entry sparked an idea. The prompt was: “What’s one thing you wish you’d known before becoming a parent?” My mom wrote about cherishing the little moments because children are the ones who carry our legacy forward. That struck a chord with me.

That’s how I landed on A Letter to My Legacy.

There are so many things I hope my child, and maybe one day, my children carry forward: our fun family traditions, decorating the Christmas tree together, camping trips, bedtime stories. Motherhood, at its core, is about creating magic and love in a home. Now that I’m a mom, I understand everything that goes into it, the exhausting nights, staying up an extra hour to make a holiday morning special, the endless packing lists for family trips.

Motherhood is exhausting, but in the best way. It’s like a runner’s high after a marathon or the deep satisfaction of baking bread from scratch, finally slathering a warm slice with butter, and taking that first bite. Every ounce of effort we pour into parenting is worth it. I hope my children think so too!
